Can we visit the whole country in one trip?
It's possible, but no month is perfect everywhere: Vietnam stretches over 1,600km across three distinct climate zones. February to April remains the best overall compromise, ideally travelling from north to south.
Does the rainy season really ruin the trip?
The rain mostly falls in afternoon showers rather than all day long. The north and centre are hit hardest between July and September, with a typhoon risk on the central coast worth watching closely.
Should a particular region be avoided depending on the season?
Yes: the north (Hanoi, Sapa) is cool and sometimes hazy from November to March, the centre (Hoi An, Hue) risks typhoons from September to December, and the south stays hot year-round with a dry season from November to April.
