Is the whole island rainy during the southwest monsoon (June-August)?
No — it soaks the west and south coasts and the hill country, but the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is dry and sunny during exactly this window. It's the mirror image of the rest of the island, and actually the best time to be there instead.
Is April worth visiting despite being transitional?
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year (mid-April) is a major, colourful national holiday, but it's also the hottest stretch of the year and a busy domestic travel period — prices can spike around the holiday itself, and transport gets booked up.
Best month for a first visit covering the classic circuit?
January or February: the driest, sunniest window for the west and south coasts, cultural triangle and hill country, just after the Christmas-New Year price spike.
