When is the best time to visit Norway?
June to August, for fjord hiking, ferry routes and the midnight sun — north of the Arctic Circle (Tromsø, Lofoten, Nordkapp) the sun doesn't set at all from roughly late May to late July. Every road, cabin and trail is open, though it's also peak season for prices and popular routes like the Norway in a Nutshell combo. May and September trade a bit of that certainty for far fewer crowds.
Why avoid November to February?
Daylight drops to just a few hours in the south and disappears entirely above the Arctic Circle (the polar night), many mountain trails and cabins close, and some rural roads and fjord ferries run a reduced schedule. It's a hard stretch for sightseeing and hiking — but if the Northern Lights are the actual goal, this is exactly when to come; see the next question.
When can you see the Northern Lights, or the midnight sun?
Northern Lights: late September to late March, best from northern Norway (Tromsø, Lofoten) away from city lights, on clear dark nights — chances peak around the winter solstice but require patience and a few consecutive nights. Midnight sun: late May to late July above the Arctic Circle, when the sun never fully sets — Tromsø, Lofoten and Nordkapp are the classic spots for it.
