When is the best time to visit South Korea (Seoul)?
April, May and October. Early April brings the cherry blossoms around Yeouido and Namsan, May offers mild, dry, comfortable days, and October delivers Seoul's best autumn colours, especially around Bukhansan National Park — all three with clear skies and far lower typhoon risk than late summer. September is a solid, less crowded alternative once the heat breaks.
Why avoid July and August?
This is when the jangma monsoon hits, usually from late June through July, stacked on top of the year's most intense heat and humidity (highs near 31°). Typhoon risk also peaks in August and can linger into September. It's the toughest stretch for sightseeing on foot — if these are your only dates, lean on covered markets, museums and Seoul's extensive subway to stay dry and cool.
Is Seoul worth visiting in winter?
For specific reasons, yes. December to February is dry but genuinely cold, often below freezing at night, so it's not ideal for long days outdoors. In exchange, ski resorts within reach of Seoul (Yongpyong, Vivaldi Park) open for the season, palaces and markets are far less crowded, and the city's indoor draws — Lotte World, museums, jjimjilbang bathhouses — cover the days you'd rather not spend outside.
